CHARLOTTE, N.C. 00 When Kelly and Wilbur Long looked to China to adopt, they wondered what challenges their child might face. Would she have a cleft palate? Congenital heart disease? A missing arm or leg?
In an age of prenatal genetic testing, when some parents try to screen out all but the so-called "perfect child," the Longs asked for a girl with special needs. They had only one request of the adoption agency: that their child be healthy enough to grow up and one day live on her own.
