The just-released 2012 USA Best Book Awards,
handed out by the trade publication USA Book News, include a local
author in the category of fantasy fiction: Vancouver's Brian Tashima, whose debut novel "Secret of the Songshell" was inspired by his 14-year-son, who has Asperger's syndrome.
Asperger's syndrome
is a neurodevelopmental disorder that's part of the autism spectrum;
its primary effects are social impairment and communication
difficulties.
I chatted with Tashima last week about the book,
which is available as a paperback and an e-book, and about his tips for
parents regarding Asperger's.
