FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- As the executive director of Victory Living Programs, a non-profit
organization that provides services to individuals with disabilities in Broward County, I was troubled to learn that the state of Florida is accused by the United States Department of Justice of warehousing hundreds of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in nursing homes.
Some of these children have been in nursing homes for as long as 10 years.
Children and nursing homes should only be mentioned in the same sentence
when discussing a child visiting or volunteering at a nursing home.
Certainly not in describing a child's place of residence. This practice
is in total conflict with the Americans with Disabilities Act.
