Opinion: Parents Need Information to Keep Their Families Safe and Healthy

From the Detroit Free-Press, a guest column by Heidi Scheer, of Commerce Township, who is the mother of a child with autism and an advisory board member to the American Medical Autism Board.

As a mother of a child with autism, I go to great lengths to do what's best for my family's health. But I have a question for Michigan legislators:
How am I supposed to protect my family's health when I can't even know which children's products are contaminated with chemicals that can harm my child's brain or increase her risk of cancer?
I am a mother to three beautiful children, one of whom was diagnosed with autism at 4 years old. I am a devoted advocate for autism awareness, as well as a business owner and entrepreneur. Like most women today, I wear many hats, but keeping my family safe and healthy is always my top priority.
Yet protecting my family's health is becoming more and more difficult because I don't have the information I need.

  1. Well said! I hate not knowing what's in my children's toys and products. It's so important for us to get this right to know information that Heidi's talking about. I hope our leaders do something soon.
