VINELAND, N.J. -- A bill on the governor's desk could be the last lifeline to keep open the Vineland Developmental Center.
Gov. Chris Christie upheld his original stance to shutter the center by June 2013 when he signed a $29.697 billion state budget Thursday that removed wording intended to spare it.
Democratic lawmakers this week inserted language in a budget alternative as a last-ditch attempt to keep the Vineland center open.
But even as Christie announced Thursday he took out that language, he promised to carefully review a bill on his desk that called for a comprehensive review of all seven developmental centers, Sen. Jeff Van Drew, D-1, said.
