N.D. Lags in Disability/Elder Law

Oped by John Johnson, an advocate/trainer at the Options Center for Independent Living in East Grand Forks.

EAST GRAND FORKS, N.D. — I came across a section of the North Dakota Century Code (14-04-01) that deals with “grounds for annulling marriage.” Reasons 3 and 6 of that section state that such annulment may be granted for reasons of disability.

That’s really offensive to people with disabilities.
True, the section likely was written in a different era; but nonetheless, it still exists, and it should be modified or nullified.
Which brings me to the larger question of how a state so rich in resources and finances continues to treat the elderly and people with disabilities. It is almost like the “massa/slave” relationship of long ago.
